Indianapolis Colts S Antoine Bethea and WR Anthony Gonzalez are among 11 players who the team has listed as being out for the preseason opener.
Bethea, one of four active-roster starters who will miss Friday’s game, sustained a broken bone in his hand late this week and Colts Head Coach Jim Caldwell said he likely will play with the hand wrapped when he returns.
Caldwell said Gonzalez will miss with a mild hamstring injury.
Also, the Colts have activated WR San Giguere (leg) from the Physically Unable to Perform list.
The other players listed as out are:
* TE Dallas Clark (concussion).
* OT Ryan Diem (back).
* WR Roy Hall.
* RB Mike Hart (ankle).
* CB Kelvin Hayden (hamstring).
* DE Curtis Johnson.
* TE Tom Santi.
* QB Jim Sorgi (hamstring).
* TE Jacob Tamme.
The absence of the three tight ends means first-year veteran Jamie Petrowski likely will start and/or play extensively, while the absence of Diem means former starting LT Tony Ugoh likely will start at right tackle. CB Marlin Jackson said earlier this week he doesn’t expect to play, so with Hayden out, look for Tim Jennings and perhaps Jerraud Powers to start at corner with a lot of playing time for Dante Hughes and Michael Coe.
The above list does not include the two players still on the PUP list: S Bob Sanders and K Adam Vinatieri. With Sanders and Bethea both out, look for Melvin Bullitt and Matt Giordano to start and play extensively at safety.
The absence onzalez means either second-year WR Pierre Garcon or WR Austin Collie likely will start opposite Reggie Wayne. The guess is that Garcon will start with both players playing extensively early. The absence of Hall will mean more time for younger players such as Brett McDermott and John Matthews.

Why is Hall out? More injury? If so, it really doesn’t look good for him. And all of these injuries to key people this early in camp is starting to look a lot like the camp of 2008…scary….
Oh, and by the way Jon, the game is Friday – not Sunday as you print in the article.
Mother of God, how many injuries are the Colts going to start out with this year??
Thank God this is a preseason tuneup, not a real game. But still… while there’s time to recover, your injury numbers tend to go up in the regular season, not down. This really concerns me.
And what’s with Clark’s concussion? How long will he be out. And when did it happen to begin with? That’s the thing that catches me off guard.
Aren’t there a lot of hammies? Really – what’s with the strength and conditioning program here?
