Indianapolis Colts WR Anthony Gonzalez won’t miss the rest of the regular season, Colts President Bill Polian said Monday.

Gonzalez, the Colts’ first-round selection in the 2007 NFL Draft and the starter opposite three-time Pro Bowl WR Reggie Wayne, sustained what Colts Head Coach Jim Caldwell called a non-contact knee injury early in a 14-12 victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars at Lucas Oil Stadium Sunday. Various reports have addressed Gonzalez’s injury, with NFL.com reporting he will miss 2-to-6 weeks.

Colts President Bill Polian addressed the injury on his weekly radio show Monday.

“We know that there’s some sprained ligaments and we know it isn’t year-ending,” Polian told Voice of the Colts Bob lamey on 97.1 Hank FM Monday evening. ”I’ll probably know a little more in a couple of hours when we finish our medical meeting. That’s what I know right now.”

For Gonzo’s sake, thank God it’s not season ending. This is his year to shine, the year when opportunity is knocking loud and clear. If he’s denied the chance to take it just because his body let him down, that would be terrible.

That said, I somewhat fear the possibility that he’ll not be 100% until much later in the season, or possibly until next year. That, too, would be a terrible thing to happen to him. How many players shine, then get injured, have a slow rehab, and are never heard from again? It would be an unjust thing to happen to this guy, and I fervently hope it doesn’t happen to Gonzo.

I’d be surprised if this injury is a career-harming deal. Not going on any inside info, just an observation. And I agree with you on hoping it’s not serious. He’s a good guy who has worked hard and takes the game seriously.
