It wasn’t difficult for Indianapolis Colts Head Coach Jim Caldwell to find positives.
While he said the offense Sunday was at times “out of sync” in an 18-14 victory over the San Francisco 49ers Sunday, he said it also made plays at critical times. The defense and special teams were solid, he said.
Most important, Caldwell said was that the Colts won the game.
“The good thing is, we find different ways to win,” Caldwell said a day after the Colts remained unbeaten by rallying in the second half at Lucas Oil Stadium in downtown Indianapolis. ”I think you have to do that. Winning in this league requires you find ways to win when things aren’t going very well.
“Things weren’t going very well for us consistently, yet we were still able to work through it.”
One of two remaining unbeaten teams in the NFL, the Colts extended their franchise-record regular-season winning streaks to 16 games. The NFL record is 21, set by New England in 2006-2008. Only three teams have won 17 or more consecutive regular-season games.
Indianapolis also remained two-and-a-half game over Houston (5-3) in the AFC South. The Texans have won their last three games, including a 31-10 victory Sunday at Buffalo.
The Colts will play host to the Texans Sunday.
“We are concerned with them,” Caldwell said. “We have to get focused on them come Wednesday and be prepared for a real tough game.”
The Colts this season have allowed more than 17 points just once, and have allowed just over 11 points a game the last five games. They rank No. 9 in total defense. On Sunday, they allowed 87 yards in the second half.
“We’re coming along and doing some good things,” Caldwell said. “Our defense did a great job of obviously getting us a couple of key sacks that made a huge difference in the ballgame. We’re getting better.”
And Caldwell said while the Colts’ offense was less consistent than normal Sunday, he also said, “It’s something that obviously doesn’t happen to us very often.”
The Colts produced 410 yards total offense, and QB Peyton Manning completed 31 of 48 passes for 347 yards and no touchdowns with no interceptions. But the Colts scored just one touchdown and scored their second-fewest points of the season.
“It’s also something you can’t put your finger on,” Caldwell said. “That’s why that general term is used for the most part, because it’s a number of things. If it was one thing, I’d be able to tell you. There are a lot of different things that contribute to it. Thus the term, ‘out of sync,’ which is what we were for a little stretch.”
