There was injury news for the Indianapolis Colts on Friday that didn’t involve DE Dwight Freeney.
But this news was comparatively minor.
WR Reggie Wayne, a Pro Bowl selection each of the past four seasons, re-aggravated a knee injury that he has played through much of the season in the final full-scale practice before Super Bowl XLIV. A pool report from the Pro Football Writer’s Association said Colts Head Coach Jim Caldwell said the injury wasn’t serious.
“He just irritated the fat pad in his knee,” Caldwell said.
According to the PFWA report, Wayne walked off the field unassisted into the trainers room. Pool reporter Peter King of Sports Illustrated wrote that “backup wideout Hank Baskett took his place in the remainder of the 1-hour, 25-minute workout, covering mostly short-yardage and red-zone work on a typical Friday practice day for the Colts.”
According to the report, Wayne pulled up short running a pass-route late in the workout and left practice 20 minutes before it ended.
“The fat pad is the collection of soft tissue below the kneecap that protects the underlying structure of the knee,” King wrote. “Wayne has had the injury much of the season and played through it.”
Also on Friday, cornerback Jerraud Powers returned to practice on a limited basis and Freeney – who hasn’t practiced since the title – missed practice again.
According to the pool report, Caldwell said Freeney “may do’’ a little running or simulated practice work later Friday afternoon.
“This is right in line with our plans,” Caldwell said.
The Colts will finish preparations with a 40-minute walkthrough Saturday at noon.
Also on Friday, Colts OG Ryan Lilja returned to practice on a full-participation basis and — like 18 of the 20 players on the team’s final injury report of the week, he is listed as probable.
Freeney and Powers are listed as questionable.
